Women and Children's Support Resources (WCSR) is a 501(c)3
nonprofit corporation located in Amador County, California. WCSR
develops educational and technical resources to help women and
children of all cultures and abilities lead healthful and productive
lives, including but not limited to the issues of family violence
and conflict resolution for women and children.
WCSR’s mission is to complement the efforts of service-oriented organizations by producing and distributing needed technical resources that will enhance existing and new programs. Specific activities include publishing and distributing brochures, workbooks and other materials in English and translations (e.g., Spanish), and serving as an exhibiting consortium for books, pamphlets, posters, videos and other educational materials at regional, national and international conferences and other forums focusing on these issues.
To achieve this mission, WCSR has brought together key individuals and organizations from both the nonprofit and private sectors. WCSR’s Board of Directors, Key Staff and Consultants and Advisory Board bring together a unique combination of individuals and organizations experienced in the family violence field and in the design, production and dissemination of technical and educational materials. A list of our “team” is available on our website: www.wcsr.org.
WCSR has full-service clearinghouse capability, including an on-site warehouse, to produce, store and distribute resource materials across the country. Through our subcontractor, Volcano Press, Inc., we have access to a database of over 25,000 professionals and organizations in the health and domestic violence fields, bookstores, universities, trade book wholesalers and distributors. Approximately one-half of the database is comprised of domestic violence victim assistance organizations and other entities (governmental, private and nonprofit) addressing domestic violence issues. Sources are from professional publications, phone queries, international, national and regional conferences and workshops. We have consolidated mailing lists from other databases, such as the National Organization for Victim Assistance, the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Our database is being continually updated and expanded.
WCSR can assist nonprofit organizations, government agencies and private companies in making resource materials available to underserved populations. For example, WCSR can serve as the publishing partner for organizations that seek to produce their own written materials as part of their program efforts. In such a partnership we produced the report: Disability Watch, The Status Of People With Disabilities in the United States for Disability Rights Advocates, a nonprofit organization in Oakland, California. With funding from private donors, WCSR assisted in the production of a Logbook for victims of domestic violence and their support people. WCSR is currently producing the book Long-Johns For A Small Chicken, in collaboration with Volcano Press, Inc., which has been made possible through a private grant. This books represents a lovely metaphor for children who need to live with their mothers or other family members in a shelter for a period of time.
In addition, WCSR has also been the coordinator for the Family Violence Publishers Consortium, which exhibits books, pamphlets, posters, videos and other educational materials at regional, national and international conferences and other forums focusing on these issues. WCSR can provide exhibiting services for other organizations as well.
Under our Gift Certificate Program, WCSR creates gift certificates in the name of the donor, and mails them to shelters or other victim assistance programs that the donor specifies. The gift certificate enables the shelter to order technical and educational resources (books, videos, etc.) from selected publishers that produce domestic violence victim assistance materials. We have partnered with several donors in this way, including: California Department of Health Services, Domestic Violence Section, Georgia Partnership Against Domestic Violence, North Dakota Council on Abused Women’s Services, UCLA School of Public Health, among others. Learn more about this ongoing service at www.wcsr.org.
On the local front, WCSR partnered with the Amador County Domestic Violence Council to co-sponsor a “Hands Are Not For Hurting” project. Under this effort, school students developed banners displaying hands with a heart in each palm, and a written pledge for nonviolence. The banners were displayed throughout the community as a traveling exhibit, as well as in classrooms. In 2003, WCSR was also the recipient of a mini-grant from First 5 Amador. Under the grant, WCSR made available technical resources to Amador County agencies and personnel to assist them in the identification, assessment and case management of child abuse.
